Saudi lifter Mohammed Al-Zouri was crowned with the first gold medal for the Saudi Greens of weightlifting in the 81 kg category in the clean and jerk at the Asian Junior Championship held in the Qatari capital Doha; he also seized the bronze medal in the total, setting a Kingdom record in the junior category in the snatch after lifting 134 kg, in the clean and jerk after lifting 172 kg, and a total of 306 points.
The Saudi team continued its brilliance and harvest of more colourful medals at the Asian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championship, after lifter Mohammed Issa Al-Halio managed to seize the clean-and-jerk bronze in the 73 kg category at the Asian Championship in the junior under-17 category.
Al-Halio’s Asian achievement came after lifting 131 kg in the snatch, 166 kg in the clean and jerk, and gathering a total of 297 points — enough to qualify him to step onto the Asian podium and receive an Asian bronze medal added to the Greens’ tally.
Lifter Youssef Al-Mudarham also won the snatch bronze in the Asian Youth Championship (under-20) after lifting 146 kg in the 81 kg category.
The attendees and followers of the championship competitions praised the great levels delivered by the Greens’ lifters in the championship so far, despite the strength of the competition and the presence of Olympic and world lifters from the Asian continent.
On the first day of the championship, the Saudi Greens had harvested 6 colourful medals: lifter Aqeel Al-Jasim’s share was two silvers and a bronze, while lifter Abdullah Al-Muhaimid won 3 bronze medals.
